staff profile, research

Sally is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Internal Examiner in the School of Pharmacy. Sally has been awarded the Teacher of the Year (2008) for the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, in part, due to her experiences with CEEBL.

Sally was one of the first CEEBL project holders (1995). With guidance from the CEEBL team (including student intern Mary Sattenstall), an EBL module in Pharmaceutical Chemistry was developed for 180 first year pharmacy students. This module integrated science and pharmacy practice, as well as equipping the students with generic skills for life-long learning, including team and independent working, time management, database searching & library retrieval, presentation skills, IT, social & academic networking and creativity. Sally has published this study (Pharmacy Education, 2009) and presented with CEEBL a workshop at the European First Year Experience (University of Wolverhampton, 2008). In 2008, Peter Whitton (CEEBL's Learning Technologist at the time) and Sally developed Blackboard as the communication hub for the EBL Pharmaceutical Chemistry module with blogs for the 32 student teams, discussion forums with subject specialists, on-line submission of assignments and assessment etc. Sally has had the opportunity to attend and present at a number of interactive workshops at CEEBL which has inspired Sally to improve aspects of her teaching, for example a recent workshop titled 'Ready Steady Learn' has been adapted as a fun ice-breaking teamwork exercise.

Student Interns 2009/10:

Ajibola Omokanye

In 2009-10 Ajibola will in his 6th year of study at the University of Manchester as an intercalating medical student. He opted to study in Manchester primarily because of the innovative approach to course delivery at the University. He was impressed, not only by the foresight shown by the Faculty in pioneering the enquiry- or problem-based approach to learning, but also the intellectual freedom permitted to students studying within the School of Medicine.

Ajibola has thoroughly enjoyed his experiences as an undergraduate and believes he made the right decision in choosing where to study. By steering away from traditional didactic teaching methods, he believes that Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has allowed him to acquire knowledge in a relaxed and more enjoyable manner, through regular discussion with peers as well as experienced specialists. In addition, the course has provided Ajibola with sufficient freedom to tailor his studies to pursue areas of particular interest in more detail, both curricular and extra-curricular.  Ajibola feels that his excellent overall experience of PBL was a result of continuing course development and, having benefited from such work, wishes to use that experience to help further improve course delivery for future students.

Kate Jones

Kate has just completed her first year of a Pharmacy degree at Manchester and is looking forward to taking on the challenges of being a CEEBL intern in her second year at the University. She undertook her first EBL project this year and this experience coupled with advice from the module leader encouraged her to apply for the post.

Kate is keen on volunteer work and is interested in the possibility of being involved in integrating this more into faculty life. During the summer of 2008 Kate completed a summer placement with Boots the Chemists in which she worked with the Pharmacy team to help the community. She has volunteered to be a peer mentor for the next academic year and is looking forward to the experiences and training that this will bring. Kate is looking forward to the prospect of working with the other interns over the next year to explore and promote the possibility of more EBL style learning within the faculty.
