CEEBL Postgraduate Workshop
"Group Dynamics"
12.15 - 4pm
CEEBL, C24 Sackville Street Building
The workshop
Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) is often based around small group work, with the tutor acting as a facilitator, setting triggers and goals and guiding the group through the enquiry process. Groups can experience communication problems during this process and this workshop aims to provide techniques and tools to help tutors deal with difficult group dynamics and encourage their student groups to self-regulate and take responsibility for themselves.
Who should attend?
The workshop is specially targeted at postgraduates who run seminar groups/ tutorials/ small group exercises e.g. Graduate Teaching Assistants, etc., who want to improve their skills as facilitators. No previous experience of EBL is needed, just a willingness to do some preparation from our website and participate in the learning activities on the day.
The workshop is not subject or faculty specific but we give participants plenty of opportunities to research and apply it to their own disciplines.
What you can expect
- The workshop will provide practical training on EBL facilitation and small group communication as well as more general tips on overcoming difficulties and improving group dynamics in small group activities.
- It will provide you with tools and techniques to diagnose how well a group is functioning and effectively facilitate group processes.
- It will also encourage you to empower your students to take responsibility for and deal with their group issues, such as conflict.
- It is structured around the EBL process itself; you will learn techniques by doing them. You will have a chance to share your experiences and tackle any concerns or anxieties.
What else we offer
CEEBL offers two additional workshops for postgraduates, one focuses on generic facilitation skills and the other on designing EBL triggers.
In addition, we would like to announce a new 6 week online GTA training course, starting in September 2009. It will go into depth over many of the aspects discussed and explored in the three CEEBL Postgraduate workshops, and offer participants a certificate of completion for attending the three face–to-face sessions, in addition to the assessed component of the online course.
