CEEBL Postgraduate Workshop
"Help! I’ve got a tutorial!"
12.15 - 4pm
CEEBL, C24 Sackville Street Building
The workshop
Taking a tutorial group for the first time can be a daunting experience. Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) is often used in tutorials and other small groups to increase student enthusiasm and participation, and has been shown to lead to better learning outcomes. The tutors’ role in EBL is as a facilitator, setting goals and providing triggers to enable students to complete the task.
Who should attend?
The workshop is specially targeted at postgraduates who run seminar groups/ tutorials/ small group exercises e.g. Graduate Teaching Assistants, etc., who want to improve their skills as facilitators. No previous experience of EBL is needed, just a willingness to do some preparation from our website and participate in the learning activities on the day.
What you can expect
- The workshop will provide practical training on how to deliver EBL activities, as well as more general tips on running seminars, workshops, tutorials and other small group activities.
- It will demonstrate the effectiveness of EBL as a teaching method and, hopefully, encourage you to use it effectively in your own teaching.
- It is structured around the EBL process itself – from negotiating ground rules to reflecting on what you’ve achieved. You will learn about the EBL process by doing it in practice.
- An offer of a certificate of completion if you attend the three face–to-face sessions (this session, our workshop on triggers, and a third on effective communication in small groups), as well as the assessed component of the online workshop.
